In a truly shocking move by rapper/music mogul Jay-Z, the “Ni**as In Paris” artist has singled none other than Kylie Minogue to his Roc Nation record label today! The exciting news was posted on his Life & Times website this morning:
“Roc Nation would like to welcome Aussie singer, recording artist, songwriter, actress and designer Kylie Minogue to the family.
In a career now spanning 25 years, Kylie has released 11 studio albums, two live CDs, eight live concert DVDs, a greatest hits double album, and multiple video packages. She has released over 50 hit singles worldwide, including the Grammy-winning Come Into My World, and has sold more than 68 million albums worldwide. Needless to say, we’re excited to have Kylie join the Roc fam.” – Roc Nation”
Kylie will be joining the likes of Rihanna, Rita Ora, Shakira, Fiona Apple & Timbaland on the somewhat young label. I am actually excited for Kylie and the new chapter in her career, but I have to admit I’m also a little worried as to which direction her music will start to lean towards. I mean, on one hand maybe she’ll finally be getting the push & promotion that will finally break her into the US market… But if she starts releasing generic Usher-like dance records and collaborating with Pitbull just to get a US radio hit, I might cry!!!!
What are your thoughts Kylie & Jay-Z’s new partnership?! A career hit or miss? Sound off…
UPDATE/MY REVIEW: I was at work when I posted the song yesterday so I couldn’t really listen to it and give a proper review. Now that I have had some time to listen and sit with it I can tell you that this was NOT the comeback single I was expecting. It’s a nice, easy/breezy r&b jam but nothing that’s going to make me want to run out and by the new album if it were available today. I’m hoping this is just a “buzz” single and they real show-stopper will follow shortly after but I’m pretty sure that isn’t the case. The good news is that while the song hasn’t even been released for a full day yet, it has already sky-rocketed to #1 on iTunes. Will the song have the staying power to top the Billboard Hot 100 as well as some other prestigious charts?? Time will tell but I’m guessing the novelty of having a new Justin Timberlake single after 7 years will run out pretty fast and he’ll need to change into a new ensemble to keep our attention.
Rumors were floating around earlier this week that Justin Timberlake was finally going to release a new single on Monday which supposedly also featured assistance by Beyonce, Jay-Z & his old time studio partner-in-crime, Timbaland! When the online rumblings came and went with Monday, some lost hope then just hours ago Justin himself tweeted the following message on his official Twitter which also prompted a response by Timbaland!
Could it be true?!! Has Justin finally crawled out his hyper-extended musical hiatus?!! And is he really dueting with Beyonce & Jay-Z?!! Guess we’ll find out tomorrow but it would make sense considering Beyonce is about to make her musical return as well just before her big stint with the Super Bowl. WAIT!! More importantly if this all pans out to be true, I think the bigger question to ask is… Will Justin make a cameo in Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance and permanently sabotage her career a-la the Janet Jackson nipple-gate fiasco?!! Can’t wait to find out…
Justin released this teaser video on his official website today in which he explains long musical hiatus and then proclaims that he’s “ready” at the end of the clip… The video then leads into a clock counting down which is set to expire on Sunday at midnight! Looks like we’re going to have to wait a few more days before we hear new music from Justin.
The topic of same sex marriage has been EVERYWHERE ever since President Obama voiced his support for the highly controversial topic that seems to be dividing our country! Today, hip hop superstar Jay-Z has opened up to CNN to voice his opinion on that matter and to tell you the truth I was pleasantly surprised with what he had to say! Especially considering the fact the topic of homosexuality is considered taboo in the “no-homo” world of hip hop. Check out Jay-Z’ impressive remarks in support of Obama’s “coming out” to support same sex marriage… Not only were his words admirable but they were very well stated!
Rihanna better watch her back… The daughter of Will & Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, has just been signed to Jay-Z’sRoc Nation record label! The nine year old new comer has just released her first single this week titled “Whip My Hair” which has garnered her a lot of comparisons to Rihanna. (Which isn’t a bad thing at this stage of the game) Here is what Jay-Z had to say in an official statement about his new venture with “the next Rihanna“…
“We at Roc Nation are excited to work with Willow. She has an energy and enthusiasm about her music that is truly infectious. It’s rare to find an artist with such innate talent and creativity at such a young age. Willow is about to embark on an incredible journey and we look forward to joining her as she grows in all aspects of her career.”
What do you guys think… Is she gonna be the next big thing eventually?! Being that she’s only 9 years old, she better release at least a good two to three albums of fluffy pop music before they try to sex her up! Just sayin’…
Willow Smith – Whip My Hair:
According to industry chatter, Christina Aguilera may be parting ways with her long-time label, RCA/Sony Music, to sign a multi-million dollar contract with Live Nation. Supposedly this label shift is the direct result of the dismal performance of her latest effort Bionic, which prompts me to believe that previous rumors about Aguilera feuding with her label over the project were probably true. Christina is definitely in a very transitional stage of her career these days… A major shake-up in like this one might be just the thing to get her on the right track again. Aguilera will be following the very famous footsteps of Madonna & Jay-Z in signing a deal with (the non-record label) Live Nation, but will not be entering the agreement on a high-note in her career like the massively successful artists before her. Aguilera’s manager, Irving Azoff, is also the chairman of Live Nation which is probably the sole reason Aguilera will be able to strike this highly beneficial deal. Either way, this will most likely be the best thing that can happen to her career at this point.
On a side-note, currently there other (very reliable) rumors circulating that no more singles will be released off of Aguilera’slatest effort, officially putting the final nail in the Bionic-era coffin. Too bad… There really are some great tracks on that record!
UPDATE: Turns out this was nothing more than a rumor. Christina’s manager Irviing Azoff made the following statement in response to the false story;
“Christina is under a long term contract with RCA records! Live nation is not a record company.
No one is giving up on ‘Bionic’. ‘You Lost Me’ is coming out in the UK. The video is out here now. You aren’t seeing her as she is finishing ‘Burlesque’. We won’t give up.”
Still no mention of a next US single… If “You Lost Me” is the last we hear off of Bionic, then I will consider that giving up.
SAY WHAT?!!! This picture of Justin Bieber smoking weed looks fake as hell but I’m kinda hoping it’s real! I’m so tired of his cheesy-ass squeaky clean image. Besides… If this turns out to be legit, he’d rack up some major street cred and could end up scoring some collaborations with Jay-Z or Snoop Dog!!
This is just about the funnies thing I’ve heard all week…
An ex-gangsta drug-lord from California named Ricky “Freeway” Ross filed a trademark lawsuit against famous rapper Rick Ross and his record label accusing the rapper of stealing his name and image to give him more street cred with his then up and coming rap career. To make matters worse, (ex drug-peddler) Ross‘ lawyer is seeking a special kind of restraining order that would block the release of (rapper) Ross‘ upcoming album Teflon Don which was slated to be released in July.
Jay-Z is also being targeted in the suit since he was the President of Def Jam Records at the time that (rapper) Rick Ross was signed to the label. According to (ex-pusher) Ross, Jay-Z should be held partially responsible for the infringement since he allowed (rapper) Rick Ross to sing under that artistic name.
So let me get this straight… A notorious ex drug-dealer and criminal had his name and image trademarked and is seriously trying to sue someone with a legitimate career over it??
Um… You’re a criminal… Somehow I have a feeling the law will NOT be on your side over this dispute.
Jay-Z gave his fans at Coachella a huge surprise when he brought his wife Beyonce out on stage to perform his hit “Forever Young” with him. Check out the footage one lucky concert goer was able to capture. B sounds amazing… Jay-Z, on the other hand, sounds a little horse.
Katy Perry must be really excited about the new music that she’s currently recording because everytime I turn around she’s been blabbing all the juicy deets about her upcoming new album. This week she revealed that Jay-Z’s hit“Empire State of Mind” has been a huge inspiration behind a new California girl themed dance anthem that she wrote for the new album…
“It’s so great that ‘Empire State of Mind’ is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the f**k? What about LA? What about California? It’s been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl’s perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the ’90s, almost house music references.”
90′s house music?!! Sounds promising! Can’t wait to hear it…
Here’s the latest musical contraption put together by the handy-work of DJ’s From Mars. This is what happens when you take Jay-Z & Alicia Keys and fuse them with The Black Eyed Peas. Another stellar DJ’s From Mars production!
Last night I DJed an AMAZING gig at Hillcrest Mardi Gras here in San Diego, CA. My crowd was effen amazing! They were on fire all night and made this gig one of my most memorable EVER! I also have to give props to some of the stellar productions that made my set so… Dave Aude’s remix of Kelis‘ “Acapella” was a crowd favorite last night as well as the Richard Vission mix of Eva Simons’ “Silly Boy.”
I wanted to give a very special shout out to DJ’s From Mars whose remix productions gave my set that little extra somethin’, somethin’ that drove the crowd BANANA’S!!! I ended my set with their incredible remix of Jay-Z, Kanye West & Rihanna’s “Run This Town” mashed with Bach’s “Mass in B Minor.” I’ve actually posted the video for this production before but if you didn’t listen to it the first time around, check out the genius behind this remix!
And I have to agree with him! While Jay-Z thinks it’s great that all these stars joined forces to lend a helping hand for Haiti… He thinks to remake a classic such as “We Are The World” is unthinkable!
“I have a interesting take on that. I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: “We Are the World,” I love it, and I understand the point and think it’s great. But I think “We Are the World” is like ‘Thriller” to me. I don’t ever wanna see it touched. I’m a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that’s going on in Haiti. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but “We are the World” is untouchable like “Thriller” is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it’s gonna be untouchable.”
Jay-Z went on to add that he feels a new “classic” should have been written for the effort…
“As everyone knows, I have tremendous respect for Quincy Jones. Of course, I think he’s genius, as everyone else does. But I think it’s time for us to make a new song. I tried to do that with “Stranded,” (The song he performed along with Rihanna, Bono and the Edge at the ‘Hope for Haiti Now’ telethon). I didn’t try to make “We Are the World,” but I tried to make our take on how we felt.”
Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” intro for tonight’s Super Bowl was AMAZING!!! … He recruited The Rutgers University Symphony Orchestra to do this thrilling orchestral version of his hit song that features Rihanna.
