The Offer Nissim remix of Whitney Houston’s “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” has made it’s debut online this weekend and while I think he did a great job reinterpreting Whitney’s supposed “comeback” single… I think I finally have come to terms with the fact that the song is really not all that great. Don’t get me wrong… It’s not “bad” by any means but it’s just not a timeless classic like many of her other hit songs. No matter who you get to remix this song, it won’t go down in history as one of Whitney’s finest moments. Not even as a dancefloor anthem. Yes… It took me this long to realize this! Probably because I’m an avid Whitney fan and wanted so badly to LOVE her comeback single…

Check out Offer’s remix… While it’s not my favorite of the remix package that we’ve gotten so far, it’s still enjoyable. I’m really feeling the “happy” strings that he incorporated in this production.

Whitney Houston has been doing most of here promo appearances in Europe lately but the US is about to see a lot more of Mrs. Houston in the very near future. It has just been announced that Whitney has been added to the roster of performers for this years American Music Award. Whitney will be performing her inspirational comeback single “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength“.  And as if that wasn’t enough… Word on the street is that she will also perform on the Dancing With The Stars finale in a few weeks. No word as to what number she’ll be doing but I’m guessing that she will probably perform the Freemasons remix of “Million Dollar Bill” on that appearance since it is a “dance” oriented program. Exciting news!

WOW… Whitney Houston performed “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” on Oprah yesterday. Not a perfect vocal but so much better than her Good Morning America performance a few weeks. And she has a few moments where you can hear that she still has the vocals down in there somewhere. And she looks amazing…

A new Whitney Houston song called “Salute“ just hit the Internet and I actually like this one after first listen unlike the last few tracks that leaked off of her album. “Salute” is a sassy Whitney number where Mrs. Houston is kissing off a love gone bad. The song was produced by R. Kelly & Tricky Stewart and is probably the most “current” sounding production that I’ve heard come off of this new album. At one point in the song Whitney takes a cue from L.L. Cool J and sings “Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years.” This is probably the most clever (and most relevant) lyric that I’ve heard her song in any of her new material including “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength“. Whitney Houston has just released a remix package for her dance music fans with 2 new remixes of “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” (produced by Peter Rauhofer & Daddy’s Groove) and a Jody Den Broeder/Warren Rigg Club Mega-Mix. This is what we’ve been waiting for from Whitney!!! All 3 of these remixes are BLAZIN’ HOT and take Whitney to that next level that has been lacking with the original version of her new music. Goes to show how much of a difference a good producer can make.

Whitney Houston’s new album I Look To You is inching closer and closer to it’s release and the closer we get, the more fun tid-bits and previews I’m finding online! There’s a lot to cover so this will be a long post, but it’s all about Whitney so we’re not complainin’ right?! First check out the clip (above) of Whitney’s rendition of the title track off of the album, “I Look To You“. The song was written by R-Kelly and sounds like a classic Whitney number. Whit-Whit (yes I just called her that) sounds AMAZING in this small clip and I’m already liking this ballad much better than the leaked “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength“.

Next, I found a track by track, detailed review of 7 songs off of Whitney’s new album posted on BET’s website… From this description, the album sounds pretty promising… Check it out…

“1. “Million Dollar Bill” (written and produced by Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats)

An up-tempo, joyful track about love and probably one of the funkiest songs Whitney has ever done. “Million Dollar Bill” has an amazing bass line and almost recalls early Michael Jackson in Off The Wall. The catchy hook, “You make me feel like a million dollar bill.” Her vocal is strong with some power notes toward the end. The song has an Alicia Keys sound but fits for Whit — it’s current without making her seem like she is trying to compete with teenagers. The song received a standing ovation.

2. “Nothin’ But Love” (produced by Danja)

Whitney’s shout out to those who her love her and those who hate on her, she’s got “Nothin’ But Love” for all of them. Completely up-tempo and definitely an R&B club track that has the potential of sounding even hotter with a remix. The vocal stays around her lower register and, again, holds some classic Nippy notes at the end.

3. “Call You Tonight” (produced by Stargate)

Fun, mature and a song everyone can relate to. Heavily produced and while it can be tough to adjust to a pure vocalist like Whitney sing to a production heavy song, the mid-tempo track works for this album. “Call You Tonight” sounds like one of the better tracks from Just Whitney. Some lyrics include, “Destiny, I believe in it” and “I wish I could stay but I got to go, I’ll call you tonight.”

4. “Salute” (written and produced by R. Kelly)

Whitney is saying goodbye to a lover who has done her wrong, but she is letting go with no anger and confidently sings, “I salute you.” Could she be channeling Bobby Brown? The song is strictly R&B and almost sounds similar to “Heartbreak Hotel” from the My Love Is Your Love album. More instruments than production with keys and a strong vocal from Whitney. One line, “You think you know everything, you think your sh*t don’t stink.”

5. “I Look To You” – R. Kelly

Say what you want about R. Kelly but the man can still make a good R&B song. “I Look To You” is the title track and my favorite song so far. Beautiful lyrics like, “As I lay me down, heaven hear me now.” Her voice is deeply powerful, channeling classic Whitney with a pop sense but an R&B vocal. This song proves that she has not lost her voice and it’s definitely a melody I cannot wait to hear live. Whitney clearly feels every line and chord, charging through the ballad, transcending her own experience and reaching others who have been through adversity. Whitney has been criticized for not being emotional enough in her music — this track knocks out that complaint. From where I could see, Bobbi Kristina, Whitney’s daughter, was getting emotional during the song.

6. “Worth It” (R. Kelly)

“This song is for the lovers…” is one of the lines. Youthful and radio friendly, another R&B track. Nothing much to add about this one, enjoyable to listen to and had folks in the audience bobbing their head — I think I even saw a few head nods from Martha Stewart!

7. “A Song For You” (produced by Stargate)

Popularized by Donny Hathaway, “A Song For You” is a new spin on the Leon Russell classic. The beginning starts slow and the crowd gasped when they realized what song she was singing. Whitney sounded incredible, nearly haunting and before you knew it the song turns into a club banger! Mr. Davis explained the song was recorded just the night before. Definitely one for those who loves Whitney’s club tracks.”

Finally, check out this Entertainment Tonight interview with Mrs. Houston & Clive Davis speaking about the new music at the album listening party. Whitney looks absolutely gorgeous and she sounds so normal and… COHERENT!! Nothing like “cracked out” Whitney we use to see made fun off on all those Mad TV sketches. Glad to have you back Whitney…

I knew it would only be a matter of time before the bootleg remixes of the leaked Whitney Houston track “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” would start popping-up. Check out Brazilian DJ/Producer Alex Dubbing’s take on the song. It sounds a little dated, yes… But it’s still very cute and gives the nay-sayers a good indication that the song actually has the potential to be huge dancefloor anthem if put in the right hands. (I’m still praying for a Thunderpuss reunion remix.)

For all you Whitney Houston fans that were underwhelmed by her leaked “comeback” single “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” you may be pleased to hear that the leaked song may not be the final version and it may not even be the first single. After the leaked track got luke-warm reviews, a fan from the Whitney-fan.com forum contacted Sony Music to ask if this was in fact the new single and if it was the final version that will end up on the album. This is the response they received from Richard Palmese at Sony;

“We love the song and the leaked version is not the final. We have not yet decided what the first single will be but this is a strong contender. Thanks for your feedback. RP”

I’m a little skeptical about this… I have a feeling that the label actually did intend on releasing the song initially but had a sudden change of heart when fans were not so impressed with the song. Whitney needs to come back with a powerhouse vocal or song… Something to make people stand up and take notice that the voice is back! I have a feeling “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” will end up the first single despite the email response. I just hope that if they do decide to go with the song, it’s drastically different from the one I’ve posted.
