Sound Off: Beyonce Inauguration Lip-Synching Scandal…

So as I’m sure you’ve all heard already… Beyonce is sitting in the hot seat today after a member of the U.S. Marine Band dropped a bombshell and claimed that Beyonce lip-synched her National Anthem performance at President Obama’s second inauguration yesterday. Supposedly, Beyonce requested the pre-reocrded backing-track last minute and cited insufficient rehearsal-time with the band as her reason for lipping. Since then, the member of the band that broke the story has been silenced and a representative for the Marines has released a statement trying to put out the fire by saying “no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded“.

But the damage may have already been done! Seems like you just can’t escape this story right now… It’s all over Twitter, Facebook, music blogs, television and radio. Some people are calling fowl and seemed deeply offended that Beyonce would resort to such studio-trickery when performing for the President. Others are defending the Super Bowl half-time show’s star entertainer by claiming that the inauguration is much too important of a gig that is watched by millions to risk any sort of snag or missed note. We all know what happens if you screw up the National Anthem these days. While some others simply refuse to believe there is any truth behind these claims at all even though the women who played in the Marine band told multiple news outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, that this was the case…

So while the Internet is a-buzz crucifying/defending Beyonce, I want to hear what my readers think about the “controversy”… Are you on “team B” or are you burning your “Single Ladies” CD-single as we speak?! Ready, set, SOUND OFF…

While I do not justify it, I can understand why hey did it, they just didn’ want any errors…

  • AHizz Says:

    Betrayoncé. Beyonsync.

  • Sean Says:

If she had messed up or something went wrong, people would not stop complaining and when she lip synced vocals she recorded earlier for this important performance and it was great and they are upset too. This is a lose/lose situation.

It doesn’t matter to me that she did. She was great.

  • Ben Says:

Personally I’m laughing my ass off at all my friends who give me such shit for being a Britney fan.

But for Beyonce, as with Britney, I could care less if they lip sync or not.

  • Jafet Says:

I read somewhere that it was because the cold weather could damage her vocal chords .. any truth to that? Anyway, we all know that Beyoncé can deliver one hell of a vocal performance, so this does not bother me at all. I’m sure she had her reasons.

  • AHizz Says:

I mean, my god, people are making it out to be as if she lip synced to an empty chair.

  • Schroeder Says:

Well Kelly performed “my country tis …” She did that live and how offen does she or anyone perform that ove the national anthem

Beyonce is a damn theif any way. The way she still somgs abd manipulate to have a writing credit. She be a sneak bitch. Would love to witness her fall on her weave.

  • BrandonJD Says:

I heard that when Kelly came off stage she gestured to Beyonce and said “It’s hard”, concerning the conditions (not being able to hear, how cold it was, etc). So it could have been a back up plan to have it prepared.

Everyone knows that Beyonce can sing, so it not like some sort of Milli Vanilli moment, but she probably felt it was too important to mess up because of the band delay and the cold weather.

  • Robert Acosta Says:

it shouldn’t matter that she lip-synced cuz I’m sure its not her first time. its just the fact she was singing for the President at a very important time.
But Beyonce already lacks authenticity so her lip syncing is just more ammunition.

  • TwistedDish Says:

No excuses. Cold weather ruins vocal chords etc all bs.

I am so tired of these singers who get paid MILLIONS to sing for a living, dial it in.

Kelly sang live why couldnt Beyonce? I mean everyone gives American Idols shit all the time.. yet we have someone like Beyonce who is considered one of the great vocalists of this generation, and she lip sings.. no excuse

  • Riley York Says:

About time somebody exposed her. The fans of the singers always attack the Britneys of pop world with that ‘she sings live’ well apparently they dont !

  • Ron Says:

So fake!!! Glad she got called out! I hope this puts a damper on her Pepsi funded comeback.

  • Jafet Says:

“The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) requested that the Marine Band accompany Beyoncé Knowles-Carter in the performance of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ at the 2013 Inaugural Ceremony,” the statement reads.

“However, there was no opportunity for Ms Knowles-Carter to rehearse with the Marine Band before the Inauguration, so it was determined that a live performance by the band was ill-advised for such a high-profile event.”

The Marine Band added: “Each piece of music scheduled for performance in the Inauguration is pre-recorded for use in case of freezing temperatures, equipment failure or extenuating circumstances.

“Regarding Ms Knowles-Carter’s vocal performance, no-one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded.”

Aretha Franklin, who performed at Obama’s first inauguration, recently admitted that she “really laughed” when she heard about the speculation surrounding Beyoncé.

    There we go. 😉

  • Taj Says:

It was Beyonce’s decision not the band’s… She arrived LATE to rehearsal so decided to just lip-synch instead.

“”She did not sing live,” an inauguration official told CNN. A pre-recording of the artist’s rendition of the National Anthem was played instead. What was heard by spectators and viewers was the sound of that recording, according to the official.

The official said Beyoncé made the decision herself the night before Inauguration Day.

Beyoncé arrived so late Sunday night she did not have time to rehearse with the U.S. Marine Band, which was asked to accompany the pop star’s performance, according to the inauguration official.

“Because she didn’t have time to rehearse with the Marine Band, she decided to use her recording with the Marine Band,” the official added. “It was all Beyoncé.”

  • So Much For Honesty... Says:

Awww, it’s cute watching all the Beyonce stans desperately trying to make this a non-issue. :’)

  • Jose Jalapeño Says:

People should just stop talking all this non sense.
If you can’t sing like Beyonce, don’t judge Beyonce.

  • So Much For Honesty... Says:

    Point proven, lol.

  • BrandonJD Says:

Whats ironic is that Beyonce is normally more impressive sounding than that recording. Just listen to her Superbowl performance of the Star Spangled Banner a few years back, which was clearly live.

Team B. Haters just wish their faves could sound half as good as her recording, let alone her live.

  • goDlEGO Says:

I think it’s just a reflection of society’s absurd expectation of perfection however this is only perpetuated by – lets face it – the consumer arts industry. So should we be shocked about this? No – it is just publicity for her upcoming album.

What can we do? Stop buying into the celebrity and start appreciating the art (even if at times it can seem like there is no soul in her art).

  • TwistedDish Says:

I think its funny that Kelly SLAYED it live.. and Beyonce had to lip sing.. hmmm lets think about that for a moment

  • Klimis Ioannidis Says:

Too much attention for nothing. What I see from this whole issue is that there are people that just wait for an artist to do a mistake or fail or whatever to make news out of it to satisfy their inner drama queens and their equaly retarded drama queen “followers”.

    Is Beyonce voiceless? – NO
Did you pay to watch her perform live? -NO
Did president Obama care about it? -NO

So since there is obviously no reason to even talk about it why did people complain? Simple, because they are nolifers and they have no other reason for existance in this life other that getting fed by negativity that makes zero sense in the end of the day. You can blame U.S. media that teach them to be absolute retards. When you get fed 24 hours and 365 days per year with bull$#@% you have no other choice but become a retard yourself.

  • TwistedDish Says:

Would a DJ do a prerecorded set and say its ok, because they can actually DJ so it doesnt matter if they do it live or not?

  • TwistedDish Says:

^ thats a rhetorical question, we all know the answer.. this bullshit about singers not having to sing live because we know they can sing is just rubbish…

it matters because there was no logical medical reason for her NOT to sing live.. everyone else sang live that except her, she felt she didnt have to sing live.. its that diva nonsense bullshit that people overlook because well.. she is Beyonce.. I beg to differ.

A legit artist would not lip sing in front of the President when they are capable of singing live, just like she is. She pulled a diva move and she is getting called on it, so Klimis take a chill pill, sorry your role model dialed it in, maybe next time she will sing live and prove that she can do the same as an American Idol winner.. jus sayin

  • Klimis Ioannidis Says:

What I’m trying to say is that simply, it’s not our business if an artist lipsynched in an appearance that we haven’t paid and we are not the target group for it. We are just outsiders. I mean, she did it on EMA’s last year and nobody cared, why did everybody started to act out about this one? Answer? Silly kind of Patriotism, drama queen-ism, and the idea that we always can have input into anything even if it’s not our business. There’s no chill pill I should take since I’m not trying to defend Beyonce because I hate this habit since mid-2011-ish that every artist, voiceless or taleneted, started lipsynching on pretty like any appearance he does, when in the past they would sing live. It’s a shift of the industry I just don’t get, but the fact that people are making too much of an issue about Beyonce on anauguration is just reductive, especialy when they do it in public and they get publicaly ridiculed. I mean seriously, out of this whole thing, the speech, the national issues, the economic issues, the health system issues (and the list goes on) the headlines are “Beyonce put in big shame our whole nation for lipsynching the National Anthem on our president’s inauguration”. Seriously? I mean REALLY?

  • TwistedDish Says:

I dont think it was a big shame on the nation, I think its more she should be ashamed of herself. As an “artist” there is a level of integrity you should have. I could see if there were something wrong that she had no control over. Microphone not working, monitors not working, band wasnt there etc.. clearly none of those were issues. She made the choice to lip sing because she was having a DIVA moment. Everyone else came to play, they wanted to show as artists they can get up there, sing live and show support for the President at the same time. She didnt, she as an “artist” made the decision to dial in a performance, on possibly one of the most watched broadcasts in the nation, shows where her integrity as an artist sits, thats what I am saying.

  • TwistedDish Says:

Whats this about paying meaning anything? If an artist does something for charity its supposed to be insincere all of a sudden? “Its ok if they doing do what they are known for, they are doing it for free…” what the fuck? Really? Lame LAME LAMEEEEEEEEEEEE

If I decide to put my brand on the line for anything, charity or paid I want to give 100%.. thats YOUR image.. saying no one paid so its ok is just a cop out.. get it?

  • Gaylord Says:

I have to agree with TwistedDish. There’s a time and a place where it is appropriate to lip-synch and when it is not! Her own concert – Go for it! Superbowl – Understandable because of the venue and level of production. Presidential inauguration which she was chosen to sing at because she is one of the strongest voices of our country (AND ONE SONG MIGHT I ADD) – Are you kidding me? It’s just inappropriate and a bad/shameful decision on her part. I wonder how much this backlash will effect her big “comeback”.
