OK… This is by far the most tragic story to come out of American Idol yet! So you guys remember Angela Martin? The contestant from Chicago that has a young daughter that has a debilitating neurological disorder called Rett Syndrome? The poor girl has had a very hard lot in life and it doesn’t seem to be letting up for her.
This year is Angela’s 3rd year trying out for Idol and this is the 3rd year that she has been struck with horribly bad luck after nabbing a golden ticket to Hollywood.
In Season 7 (Angela’s first time trying out for the hit music competition.) Angela’s dad who supported her through her audition was murdered a week before Hollywood week. Angela braved through grueling “weeding out” process of Hollywood week, hoping that she could at least make him proud by following her dream but was eliminated after making it through to the second round.
Season 8 Angela came back and was ready to show the judges that she worked hard since they last saw her and took all of their advice to become a better performer… Again she nabbed the golden ticket but never made it to Hollywood due to a warrant for her arrest and a mandatory court date was issued for a traffic violation.
This year, Angela (Barely making the 28 y.o. age restriction) returned to the show stronger than ever in her audition! She sang a beautiful rendition of Mary J Blige’s “Just Fine” and was set to concur Hollywood week after she was given a golden ticket for the third time… But all is not “fine” in Angela’s world since that audition.
Tragedy has struck poor Angela’s life yet again after her mother, Viola Martin, has gone missing on Christmas day. She was last seen leaving a family dinner with her children to pay a holiday visit to another daughter… But she never made it to her destination. Her car was later found parked in a forest reserve and she hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
Absolutely heartbreaking! Angela has not given up hope for finding her mother and continues to search for her. This is what she told People Magazine;
“We haven’t heard anything yet… The detectives have been calling my sisters and myself, and just keeping us informed. They say they are still just looking and asking us more questions, if we know anything but her friends are calling us, so it’s hard… We haven’t stopped looking. We’ve been out in the cold, and before I left to go to Hollywood, we were looking. I think what hurts us the most was they found her car but they didn’t find her. It was abandoned in a forest preserve in the dark. We just want to know, what were you doing over there?”
Angela’s mom is described as a 5-ft. tall, 165 lbs., light-skinned African American woman with blond and brown hair. From the sound of some of her statements, Angela still whole-heartedly believes that her mom is alive and well somewhere out there;
“My mom’s a very outgoing person… She loves people, period, and she loves kids. When people see her, they just need to say, ‘You need to call your kids,’ and she would probably break down and you will know it’s her right off the bat.”
I pray for Angela and her family’s sake that her mother is somewhere out there doing OK. I really hope that Simon and the AI crew PLEASE cut this poor girl a break during Hollywood week. Given the circumstances and the extreme stress that she’s under yet again, I think she deserves a fair shot to peruse her dream compete on the show! ANGELA MARTIN FOR AMERICAN IDOL 2010!!!
