9th Annual Hillcrest Mardi Gras

Raises Historic Amount during a Tough Economy

Street Party raises over $34,000 for LGBT college scholarships
and the Hillcrest Business Association.

SAN DIEGO – The GSDBA Charitable Foundation and the Hillcrest Business Association are basking in the success of the Hillcrest Mardi Gras Street Party held on February 16, 2010.  The annual event benefits both organizations and is patterned after the annual celebration held in New Orleans each year.

The Hillcrest Mardi Gras Street Party has grown steadily over the years, but the attendance this year was unprecedented.  The Hillcrest event offered San Diegans an opportunity to celebrate and experience Mardi Gras without spending a huge amount of money.  “We are excited that this year’s event exceeded all expectations” said GSDBA Charitable Foundation President Stampp Corbin. “It is so exciting to see the community come out in support of LGBT youth and the Hillcrest Business Association.” Matt Ramon, Mardi Gras Event Coordinator, said “This was the best year ever; more than 3000 guests enjoyed the party “

The event netted over $34,000 to be shared by the GSDBA Foundation and the Hillcrest Business Association, an 11% increase over last year’s proceeds.  The GSDBA Charitable Foundation will use the money to provide college scholarships to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) youth and LGBT community straight allies within the San Diego community.  The Hillcrest Business Association uses its part of the proceeds to further its mission to ensure that Hillcrest is a thriving, vibrant community, with an outstanding business presence. Ben Nicholls, Hillcrest Business Association President said “We are already planning for next year, the 10th anniversary of the event.”

Applications are now being accepted for the GSDBA Scholarships that will be issued for the college year beginning in August.  The application deadline is May 31, 2010. Complete information and criteria can be found at HYPERLINK “http://www.GSDBAFoundation.com”www.GSDBAFoundation.com.

The Hillcrest Mardi Gras will be celebrated on March 8, 2011 and promises to be another fun-filled evening featuring games, food, live entertainment, costumes and of course, beads!
