One day, One dream, One nation

by: Big Mike | May 27th, 2009

California what’s going on….. Put aside your religious and moral beliefs and do what is right. We are all living in a land were I was told we were Free. But yet we still as Americans are fighting for the basic freedoms I always though I was born with. It’s been with in the last one hundred years that women have been given the right to vote, and yet they still are fighting to be considered equal. And some parts of the world women aren’t even consider second class citizen. What sadden me is so many women in this country stand up against another group of people to say they are not equal. You will never be free until we are ALL FREE. It’s been in the last sixty years that the civil rights moment was fighting to be consider equals in this country as well. What really surprises me is that this country has asked every ethic, diversity group to fight wars to keep this so called freedom that each and every American is said to have. We as Americans seem to forget the shoulders we stand on. So many people have died and sacrifice to help keep this freedom alive. It seems to me that once these groups get there rights , they forget the struggles that were given. Remember if we do not come together as a people , we will all lose out in the end. Just because you do not believe the way I do doesn’t mean my rights should be less than yours. Lets come together and really practice what we have fought for, not just for the chosen few , but for every American.

After I got off work from the Caliph, I was invited to join Sherman, Nicole, Stampp, Dan ,Mike, Chris and a few others that were at our table to eat at Hawthron Restaurant for Dinning out for Life.( It was really wonderful to know that so many business had agreed to participate in giving back to our Community Center.( Thank you all.) We had the privileged of having Council member Carl DeMaio as our waiter, Who did a great job of taking care of our table. By the way I need to mention that the staff at Hawthorn was just as wonderful as they always are, they just had people not knowing what they were doing following them around. It was truly wonderful to see the place full and people still waiting to get a table when we were leaving. I heard it was busy all over town.So Thank You to everyone who help support this great event, those of you that volunteered, and the business that agreed to give back a percentage to make this event successful. It always an easy and fun way to give back to your community. So over all it was a delicious day.

by: Big Mike | April 28th, 2009

ZANNAMonday I along with my two room mates went to set a wonderful Musical that I recommend all of you to go see.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to grow up straight in a world where gay was normal and straights were discriminated against? See and hear for yourselves this message of love delivered by a youthful and energetic cast with song, humor, passion, compassion and honestly that makes you feel the love they have for what they are doing!!! Ariel Performing Arts Presents “Zanna, Don’t – A musical Fairy Tale playing Fri., Sat. & Sundays at 7:30PM now thru May10 at Roosevelt Middle School 3366 Park Blvd. Tickets/info available on-line at www.ZannaSD.com or call 619-692-1875. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! Please tell your friends and take them to see it. Trust me, you won’t be sorry.
ZANNA, DON’T! – A Musical Fairy Tale” is an award-winning Off-Broadway show that takes place in a topsy-turvy world where everything is reversed — the captain of the chess team is the coolest guy in school, the quarterback of the football team can’t seem to fit in, and being gay is the norm. Things go awry when the school’s two closeted heterosexuals realize their feelings for each other. Can Zanna, Heartsville High School’s magical matchmaker, come to their rescue and make the world safe for their love? Will they all live happily ever after? Accompanied by a high-octane score that runs the gamut from pop, funk, R&B and Broadway to dance club mixes and touching ballads, Zanna tackles prejudice and challenges the way we view love.

Baby Cakes – My favorite Coffee House!

by: Big Mike | April 24th, 2009

BABY CAKES Every single Thursday morning at 9:00 am I meet my friends Bart, Dean and Warren at the old David’s Coffee house, (Now known as BABY CAKES) for our weekly meeting on a wonderful project we are working together on. We have found this to be a great meeting place. I personal am a green tea lover , which I found out is so good for you. But then I have to have a piece of their amazing gourmet cup cakes,or pastries. (I wonder why I’ve gained so much weight, can’t help it , I love their sweets) Now the other day I discovered on their menu the most delicious chicken pot pie quiche.OMG it was so good,it’s now my new favorite. The staff that works there are so friendly and helpful. I had my birthday cake made from Baby Cakes for one of my past birthday/fundraiser , It was the most beautiful and delicious cake I’ve ever had for any birthday to date. The best part of Baby Cakes is that they do want they can to give back to our community. I so believe that we all should support those business that give back. So as we continue to support them, then they are able to continue to support the community. If you haven’t been by,go check them out, they just added a beer and wine bar. So if your not into sweets then go by for a drink. See you on Thursdays.

One of My Favorite People

by: Big Mike | April 22nd, 2009

COURTNEYI met Courtney Ray the year Club Montage opened through my then roommate Joey Arruda. Courtney was a wild and fun person I would see every now and then at events, or because I would go down to see Joey and John at the club. As years have gone by I have had the pleasure of working more with Courtney with her help in donating food for so many charity events through Baja Bettys . Courtney is one of the managers and in charge of catering at Bettys. Every time you go to Bettys your almost sure to see Courtney welcoming people with her smile. I personally am always glad to see Courtney when I drop by for lunch. So Thank You for all you do Courtney for not only Baja Bettys , but all you do to help make such a powerful difference in so many lives in our great community. Keep up the great work and thank you for your kindness towards me over all these years. Go support Courtney at Baja Bettys. See you soon my dear. LOVE YOU.

Charlie Gaffey birthday /fundraiser provides a helping hand

by: Big Mike | April 21st, 2009

CHARLIEThis pasted Sunday,April 19th at True North Tavern friends and family of Bartender Charlie Gaffey came together not only to wish him a Happy Birthday but to show financial support as well. See Charlie has courageously been battling four different cancers, which has kept him from working the last several months. So along with Nicole Murray Ramirez, Tom Brown, Sherman Mondoza and myself we held a gathering to give a helping hand to a friend that was in need of our communities support. It seemed that everyone got involved from Eric and Leannn of True North Tavern, Greg Cruz for putting together his flyers and posters, to Will Copy donating the printing. The kindness of the GLT for the ad space, SDPix for there email blast,to the many businesses donating gift certificates for the raffle, even some of Charlies customers made food to bring to the event as well. The list of supporters just keeps going on. Both council members Todd Gloria and Carl DeMaio showed up and stayed to show their support for one of our own. Over all the day was very special and touching to say the least. Charlie’s Mom and step Dad, along with his sister Jill from San Antonio, Texas were also there to witness the outpouring of love for Charlie. Even a long time friend (Joe Glow) of Charlie’s flew in from Florida to be here just for the event. Because of the love for Charlie over $5000.00 was raised to help Charlie during his battle. He was so touched with the love and caring of his friends he sat and just cried. To every single person that gave up a little time of their life on Sunday to be with Charlie. THANK YOU. For every single dollar that every person donated (especially during these hard times) THANK YOU. For every single thought and prayer each of you give towards Charlie, THANK YOU.
IF any one who reads this and still would like to send a donation of any amount. please make your checks out to the”Ben Dillingham Grant” memo Charlie Gaffey, and then mail your donation to Big Mike P.O. Box 33224, San Diego, CA 92163. Thank You all again who gave of your hearts and wallet. Your kindness has made a positive and healing difference.
